What Exactly Are Lip Lines?

Lip lines are those fine lines and wrinkles around lips and are a common concern many people wish to reverse. While they often show up as more noticeable on the top lip, they can affect both the upper and lower lips. These lines tend to deepen with age, but they’re also influenced by lifestyle factors. What causes lip lines, why do they appear, and what's the best ways to manage them?

Age naturally and beautifully.
Kissy faces are cute, but don't hold them for too long.

Causes

Lip lines can form for a variety of reasons:

  • Smoking: Smoking contributes to premature aging of the skin and deepens wrinkles, including those around the mouth. This happens from the constant exposure to free radicals which damage the cells around the mouth and face and cause them to age faster.

  • Puckering: Frequent puckering from smoking, using a straw, whistling, or even concentrating can crease the skin and create lines over time.

  • Aging: As skin loses collagen and elasticity with age, wrinkles naturally form around the lips.

  • Dry Skin: Dry lips and the skin around your mouth can magnify the appearance of lip lines and can actually encourage them to set in and deepen.

Solutions

While treatments like Botox, fillers, laser, or micro-needling can reduce the appearance of lip lines, you can kickstart the process at home with techniques and ingredients that can be just as effective and offer lasting results.

It's essential to tackle the root causes first. Here’s how:

1.    Quit Smoking: Smoking accelerates the breakdown of collagen and elastin in the skin, leading to wrinkles and fine lines. Stopping will help prevent further damage. If quitting isn't on your immediate to-do list, you could consider switching to using a patch or a pouch, keeping in mind that these options also come with their own risks.

2.    Limit Straw Use: Using straws regularly can encourage puckering, which leads to wrinkles over time.

3.    Become Facially Aware: Many of us subconsciously hold repeated expressions like a pucker or a frown. Becoming aware of this can greatly help you take control of your wrinkles. If you notice yourself puckering, pursing, or frowning when concentrating, pause, relax your face and lips, and focus on your expression. Over time, this awareness can help break the habit.

4.    Mini Facial Massage: This is our go-to solution for immediate rusults which, over a short period of time, become noticable lasting results. We recommend doing this mini massage a few times a week either with your morning or evening facial routine, or when you notice you've been holding a pucker or a pout. This "ironing out" technique can help fade lines by reversing the creasing caused by puckering.

Mini Massage:

  • Make sure your lips and face are relaxed (take a few deep breaths or hum a constant note for a minute or two with lips closed, breathing through your nose to promote relaxation).

  • Use your fingertips to smooth out wrinkles by gently pushing down at the center of the lips and and gliding along the outer lip line. Do this action 5-10 times.

  • For a more effective result, apply jojoba oil or other facial oil containing antioxidants before your mini massage.

  • When you're done, try to maintain your relaxed state so you don't slip back into a held expression.

  • Pro-tip: Use this technique for any set-in expressive lines, like horizontal lines on the forehead or verticle lines between the brows.

5.    Use Proper Skincare:

  • Keep your skin hydrated by drinking enough water on a daily basis.

  • Use a nourishing lip balm that actually keeps your lips hydrated (We love Wild Hazel's Lip Bliss and Pink Salt Lip Bliss for this!).

  • Use a a facial oil and moisturizer to keep the skin around your lips supple and plump. Well-moisturized skin is less likely to develop deep wrinkles. Our organic Jojoba Oil works miracles on lines and wrinkles and will keep your lips and the skin around them naturally exfoliated, hydrated, and plump.

  • Using jojoba and other stable oils rich in antioxidants will help protect your skin from UV rays and can restore damage caused by oxidative stress, but be responsible about covering up and not over-extending your time in the sun.

Embrace Your Expressions

It’s important to note that we’re not suggesting you walk around expressionless. Smile, frown, pout - do all the things! The key is to be mindful of overusing certain expressions and to give your facial muscles a break when needed.

The Takeaway: By combining these tips with healthy lifestyle choices like staying hydrated and enjoying sunshine responsibly, you can manage the appearance of lip lines and age naturally and beautifully. Keep hydrated, stay facially aware, and let your face do the talking — just with a little less puckering!
